Differences between tungsten and molybdenum

Molybdenum and tungsten are both refractory metals with similar characteristics, but they do have some distinct differences. Here are a few key differences between molybdenum and tungsten:

1,Melting Point: Tungsten has a higher melting point than molybdenum. Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals, at approximately 3,422 degrees Celsius (6,191 degrees Fahrenheit), while molybdenum has a slightly lower melting point of about 2,620 degrees Celsius (4,748 degrees Fahrenheit).

 

2,Density: Tungsten has a higher density compared to molybdenum. Tungsten has a density of around 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter, making it one of the densest elements. Molybdenum has a slightly lower density, around 10.2 grams per cubic centimeter.

 

3,Strength and Hardness: Tungsten is generally harder and stronger than molybdenum. Tungsten has excellent mechanical properties, making it highly resistant to wear, deformation, and high stress conditions. Molybdenum is also relatively strong and durable but not as hard as tungsten.

 

4,Electrical Conductivity: Both tungsten and molybdenum have good electrical conductivity but differ in their resistivity. Tungsten has a higher electrical resistivity than molybdenum, meaning it is not as conductive. This makes tungsten more suitable for certain electrical applications where lower conductivity and higher resistivity are desired.

 

5,Corrosion Resistance: Molybdenum has better resistance to corrosion compared to tungsten, especially in acidic environments. Tungsten can be susceptible to corrosion in certain conditions, while molybdenum is more resistant and stable.

Tungsten is often used in applications requiring high-temperature resistance, such as incandescent light bulb filaments, rocket nozzles, and high-temperature furnace components. Molybdenum is commonly used in applications such as electrical contacts, heat sinks, catalysts, and alloys in the aerospace, defense, and electronics industries.

 

Though molybdenum and tungsten share many similarities, these differences make them uniquely suited for specific applications depending on the requirements of each particular use case.
