Medical Tungsten Alloy Shield
Medical tungsten alloy shielding materials are divided into two categories. One is high specific gravity tungsten alloy material, which is mainly composed of more than 90% tungsten powder mixed with other metal powders such as nickel, iron, and copper powder. Heat resistant shielding material made of ferrotungsten metal powder immersed in silicone or resin polymer. It has the characteristics of high density, high radiation shielding, and environmental protection, and is the first choice for manufacturing medical radiation shielding parts.
Application of Medical Tungsten Alloy Shield
Medical tungsten alloy shielding parts are mainly used in nuclear medicine, as radiation shielding materials for radiation therapy of cancer tumors, medical imaging, and radioactive tracers. Medical tungsten alloy shields can be used in collimators, nuclear radiation shields, ray blockers, PET syringe shields, protective tanks, radioisotope containers, and deoxyribonucleic acid (FDG) containers, multi-leaf collimators, etc.
1. Radiation therapy
Medical tungsten alloy shields can be used as shielding materials for medical linear accelerators, medical multi-page gratings, X-ray therapy machines, and other medical equipment, and are often used in radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is the use of one or more ionizing radiation to treat malignant tumors and some benign diseases. The means of radiation therapy is ionizing radiation. The most commonly used direct ionizing particles in radiation therapy are electrons, and the most commonly used indirect ionizing particles. The energy range of X-radiation used in radiotherapy is 1-25MV. The tungsten alloy radiotherapy shield can narrow the particle beam or light wave, make the particle beam along a specific direction, that is, only allow the radiation parallel to the treatment shield to pass, or make the spatial cross-section beam narrower to limit the amount of radiation.
2. Medical Imaging
Medical tungsten alloy shields can be used as shields for CT tomography scanners. CT scanners produce X-rays, which are powerful electromagnetic energy. This higher energy level allows X-rays to pass directly through most soft tissues in the body. The rays that penetrate the human body will be absorbed by the tungsten radiation shield, and the obtained data will be transmitted to the computer for imaging using the principle of light and shadow.
3. Radioactive tracers
Medical tungsten alloy shields can be used as shields for extraction shielded syringes and PET shielded syringes. The extraction shielded syringe has a 2mm thick tungsten alloy part. This part protects the arm from radiation when the syringe is withdrawing the radiopharmaceutical. When the drug is injected into the human body, the tungsten alloy parts can be removed. The 9mm thick 5.2g/cc tungsten alloy shield provides maximum protection and is easy to remove. There is a knob on the shield that securely holds the shield to the syringe.
