(1) Unlike many other metals, tantalum must be very clean before heat treatment. If it is not cleaned very cleanly, surface contamination caused by hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon will occur and become embrittled tissue. Because hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon are very active intrusive elements in the temperature range of tantalum annealing, once contaminated with these elements, there is no other way to remove them except remelting.

(2) Almost all tantalum plates are cold worked. Generally, starting from a tantalum ingot of 15-30cm, cold forging into a slab with a thickness of about 8-10m, and then cold rolling from this slab, the compression rate can be above 95%. In commercial production, slabs are usually rolled into sheets with a thickness of 0.63-1.2 cm by two rolling mills or four rolling mills, and the width is generally 51-102 cm. Representative rolling is carried out at room temperature or close to room temperature, to prevent oxides from forming on the surface.
