Thorio-tungsten electrodes are easy to operate and work well even under overload currents, and are still used by many people as part of high-quality welding. However, people are increasingly looking at other types of tungsten electrodes, such as cerium and lanthanum. The thorium oxide in the tungsten-thorium electrode produces a small amount of radiation, which makes some welders reluctant to approach them.
